Animating from images or video clips? The extension can't include the image library that cutting sprite sheets, removing backgrounds, aligning frames, cutting a character into parts, reading PSDs and video clips, animated stills, auto-meshing and image-to-3D use. For those, use the npm setup below. In Claude Desktop, that's the Claude Desktop (manual) tab. Assembling a flipbook or a rig from PNGs you already have works in the extension.
Previews and GIFs draw in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, so with either installed (Edge comes with Windows) there is nothing to set up. With neither, install a headless Chromium once with npx [email protected] install chromium (this needs Node.js). Use that exact version: it is the one the extension carries, and a different one fetches a browser the extension won't find.
Automatically downloads the correct binary for your platform. Requires Node.js 18+.
Previews, GIFs, video clips and conversion checks draw in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (Edge comes with Windows), or in Playwright's Chromium if you have installed it. With none of them, run npx [email protected] install chromium once.
Run in your terminal:
On Windows, wrap with cmd: claude mcp add rivemcp -- cmd /c npx -y rivemcp. Add --scope user to enable it in every project.
Cursor doesn't support one-click .mcpb install yet. Three manual steps:
npm install -g rivemcp (or grab the binary from the Manual Install section below)~/.cursor/mcp.json (or workspace .cursor/mcp.json):
If you prefer JSON config over the one-click .mcpb install above, add to claude_desktop_config.json:
Download the standalone binary if you prefer not to use npm:
Then point your MCP client's "command" at the binary path directly. A binary on its own has no image library or headless browser beside it, so the image, video-clip and preview tools need the npm install.
Windows: SmartScreen may warn — click "More info" then "Run anyway".
macOS: run xattr -d com.apple.quarantine rivemcp-*
